Shushtar; An Ancient City With Glorious History

Shushtar is an ancient fortress city in the sort-west of Iran. According to the Iranian mythology, the founder of this city is supposed to be Hushang Pishdadi.

In the Elamite times, Shushtar was known as Adamdun. In the Achaemenes times it was a significant settlement. The modern name of the city (Shushtar) is connected with the name of another ancient city, Susa (Shush) and means “Better (Greater) than Shush.

The city were conquered by Muslims in the Omar caliphate period. Thereafter, this city had history between various groups of Muslims, and after Amir Timor it became the center of Shiite sect. City had experienced some battles and many people were killed it those battles.

During the Sassanian era, it was an island city on the Karun River and it was chosen as a summer capital. The River was channeled around the city, and it used to have bridges and main gates into the city from east, west and south. Having rivers nearby the city, was conducive to the extension of agriculture.

Due to enjoy of this situation, the city has a wonderful complex irrigation system from the Sassanid era, Although it is said that part of this irrigation system are originally date to Achaemenes era.
